The Handmaid's Tale

Have you ever read a book multiple times, but you still want to start over the second you've finished it (for the second or third time)? That's how I feel about Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. This isn't a new book, so if you're an avid reader, and maybe even if you're not, you probably already know about it.

This is definitely not my typical type of book. I prefer stories that are set in the past, usually around 1900 or so. I rarely, if ever, read books set in present day...for some reason I just don't feel whisked away into a story if it takes place right now. The Handmaid's Tale, however, is actually set in the future in what used to be the United States- a frightening future where women aren't allowed to read and have been separated into different groups with different purposes. They are stripped of their names and everything about the life they once knew. It's one of those "Big Brother" stories that is is truly chilling.

If you haven't already read this book, even if it's not your thing, you must do so. Every time I read it, I can't put it down. Get it here. Do you have a book that you've read multiple times and will continue to do so? I'd love to know what it is so I can check it out!

Weekend thrift store score.

Just a couple of thrifty finds this weekend:

I'm not usually a placemat type of girl, but I thought these vintage ones were so cute, and I also thought it might be kind of fun for Julia to set the table in a cute way for dinner. I couldn't resist the casserole dish (8 inches square) because it matches my sugar bowl in this post

Just when I thought I wouldn't be able to find anything else,  I spotted these milk glass trivets:

I always need trivets, and I love milk glass, so these were a nice find! I hope you found some thrifty goodness this weekend, too. :)

Lazy Saturday morning pics around the house

It's a sunny, lazy Saturday morning today so I thought I'd snap a few quick photos.

I hope you're getting some sunshine, too! Have a great weekend. :)

Addict.

I've mentioned it before on this blog: I have a ring problem! Here is a photo of just a handful of what I seem to have acquired over the years. Any other ring addicts out there? Even though I have plenty of them, I'm always on the lookout for another.

I've been wanting this one from Jennifer Cervelli Jewelry for the longest time:

I've kind of always had a thing for horseshoes. So cute, and it can be personalized, too!

I've also always been drawn to these gorgeous resin rings from Spotted Dog Farm :

Each ring is encased with real flowers or leaves. I love the idea of wearing a little bit of nature around your finger. Don't you think a bunch of these rings would make the most eye-catching display ever? I really can't choose a favorite.

I've also started considering those above-the-knuckle rings all over the place nowadays. This one from We Are Arrow is so sweet:

I haven't yet decided if I'm able to pull off this look. Plus, knowing me, I'll lose one of these rings in about five seconds. I'm big on losing things. I love the braided look of this one, though. I've got my eye on it!

I could go on and on...as I said, I'm an addict!

P.S. I love how the horseshoe ring pictured above is shown with the name Belle. Belle is Julia's middle name, who, by the way, completely grew up since I took my blogging break and is now taller than me. My little girl's not so little anymore!

Oh, how I love these.

How wonderful are these old bricks turned into books?! Daryl Fitzgerald of Light Reading Melbourne repurposes old bricks into literary works of art. Unfortunately, you can't get these in the US, or I'd be ordering one, for sure! You can pick from a long list of made-to-order books. Which title would you choose? It's so hard to decide!

Find out more at Salvage and Selvedge here or on Facebook here. Just lovely!

Thrift store score!

I've had a lot of thrift store scores during my blogging break! Here are a couple of great items I got at the same thrift store during one of my lunch breaks a while back. The first (above) is a really great jug or crock in the best teal and orange colors. The paint is worn and old and I love it that way. It's pretty big, too, at about 10 inches tall. It's also really heavy. It's a great piece and was well worth the $2.00!

Below is a great original painting that makes me want to go to an outdoor antique flea market (as if I didn't already want to do that).

At first, I thought it was a paint-by-numbers painting, but there are a lot of parts about it that make me think otherwise. I guess it doesn't matter because I love it either way! With the frame, it's about 14.5 x 18.5 inches. I thought it was a good deal at $10.00.

Anyone still here?!

Wow, I've been away from my blog for way too long! I needed a bit of a break, and acquired some great vintage finds since I last posted. I also took some trips and spent some time hiking and enjoying the beautiful outdoors. The photo above is one I took while hiking in Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois this past fall (it looks much better if you view it larger!). It was a gorgeous place.

I'll be back very soon and I'll have lots to show. In the meantime, why not hop over and enjoy two blogs I've been loving since I last posted?

This one  is made up entirely of photos that will make you want to wake up in the middle of a forest every morning, or maybe immediately make some tea or start gathering sticks to go make a fire. I love it!

This one is dedicated to antique photos of handsome men- not exactly the type of blog I'd usually visit, but this one is funny and so interesting, and offers a little bit of history about the man in each photo. If you love old photos, go check it out!

I do hope there are still some of you left out there! I'll be sure to have some great things to show you very soon. :)
