I think this is so cool..

This is a public bookshelf in the middle of the sidewalk in Berlin. Isn't it great?! I wish we had things like this where I live. I'm wondering if it's just a book-swapping post where people can take one out and replace it with another. I originally found this photo here but the original source is here.

***Edit: Upon further investigation, I found this is, indeed, a book-swapping tree! The plastic coverings are hinged on top and you can lift them and swap a book for a book. I think it's great that the books don't get stolen or vandalized.

  4. So great! A friend was recently telling me about a similar thing in the Subways of Japan. They have couches set up with bookshelves, so you can relax and enjoy a book while you wait for the train. Can't imagine something like that in the NY subways :-)

  7. that is just amazing, working for the library here, I would suggest this to save the money that they are losing on using 1 million dollar self check machines, we could just install trees.
    LOVE IT!

  9. That is so darn cool!!! I love that kind of stuff--when people/strangers share things harmoniously :) Heck I even love the little containers of crosswalk flags attached to poles where I live. And a bookcase tree, oh me oh my!
