Clara

Have you met Clara yet? She is a 94-year-old grandma with her own youtube channel called Depression Cooking. She has a whole collection of videos (and a whole bunch of fans!) where you can watch her make meals she ate during the Great Depression. Her videos are addicting...go watch them all! She is funny and charming, and I am definitely going to try some of the things she makes- inexpensive and good! I'm a little scared of her new video, though, for dandelion salad. Has anyone ever tried this?

P.S. The antique hankie and blue creamer in the photo are items I received in a vintage swap a couple of years ago and I still cherish them. I've been thinking about doing another swap soon- anyone interested?

P.P.S. I seem to have confused some of you into thinking my name is Clara! It's Amy, but I do love this hankie!

  2. Oh wow, she's adorable!! I've had dandelion greens! I actually feel silly now, because we *bought* them... should've thought to go pick some weeds!! :) They're slightly bitter, if I remember correctly. I'm not much of a salad person.

I have to watch more of these! I just noticed that she has the same winking-owl cookie jar that my mother-in-law has!

  5. I have yet to see the videos but I will make sure to check them out. The hanky and the creamer are the prettiest colors!
& I think I might know why you were seeing weird symbols. I use Mozilla Firefox and I switched over to Internet Explorer and saw the same things. Do you use Internet Explorer?

  6. I'm going to go check her out. I've never eaten dandelion flowers, but I have had the greens in a salad. They're delicious (if you like bitter greens).

  9. Lisa- I've done many and I'm still alive. lol ;)

--well it's not the flowers, just the leaves..I don't think I could do it, either..but watch some of her other videos. Everything is the bare minimum and very simple, but most things look really good!

  12. I've never heard of Clara--94 that's awesome! Of course my grandma (on my mom's side) was always talking about the depression, although her recipes probably wouldn't have been a youtube hit, e.g. pasta with tomato soup on it yikes! She made some excellent golumpki though. Speaking of vintage stuff, that same grandma gave me a blue glass bowl which I'm pretty sure is depression glass? I love it. Old things are so neat :) Old people are even better!
