We just had to do it.

Stuart's passing has left a great void here, and I'm wondering if he was put into our lives to change the way we feel about rodents. I mean, to most people, rats are...well...rats. My daughter is having a hard time with it and went to go sleep over with her grandma last night. While she was there, I bought the little guy above. He is a hairless dumbo rat, and let me just tell you, he is sweet as sugar. When you walk into the room he runs right to the top of the cage to greet you. He loves to be held. He doesn't bite, and he'll even lick you. My daughter doesn't know I did this, and when she gets home she will find him with a nice little home right in her room.

I'm waiting to name him until she can be here to help decide, but I kind of like Templeton from Charlotte's Web or Samuel Whiskers from the Beatrix Potter stories. He also looks like a Stanley to me. I hope he puts a smile on her face.

  2. He's so adorable, though I must admit this is the first time I've used such a word to describe a rat... I think Stanley fits perfectly... But wouldn't you want to name him Stuart after his late predecessor...?

  3. I think I'd go for Sam Whiskers. He's SO cute ! It was a great idea, I'm sure your daughter will love him ! You're such a great mom :) Whenever I lost one of my little companions my parents said "it had to happen" and wouldn't get me anything even if I spend weeks mourning heh. Every time I've owned a rodent, I've had to sneak it in and they'd find out randomly after a few days or even weeks, always the same "Oh, not again".
Heh, hope she loves him, and I too hope she chooses Sam Whiskers ;P Heheh

  5. He is stinking adorable!!

You do know that you really need to get him a roommate as rats do soooo much better in pairs.

I am so thrilled that little Stuart left such a mark on you that you've decided to let rats into your life. They really do make the best pets.

Your daughter is going to be thrilled.

If you ever have any rat related questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. I have rats too!

  6. Thank you, everyone! FishStikks, there was one other hairless dumbo rat at the store, but someone else was buying him. I held some of the furry regular rats and they weren't nearly as nice. So I think if I get another, I'll want another hairless. :) My daughter gets home in 20 minutes and I can't wait to see her face!!

  7. Awww, he's SO adorable!!! I love his elephant ears! Such a photogenic baby! I vote for Sam Whiskers, but then again, you already knew that.
Better keep the cats away from him though. Wouldn't want one of them to end up in a Roly Poly pudding. (course, considering his size, the tables might be turned a bit!)

  11. For some reason my comment didnt seem to make it through.

Make sure to research rats online, ratforum.com is a great source of information, there are very kind members there. It was a great resource for me when we had rats.

He will need a buddy like someone suggestion and they need very specific care to keep them from getting respitory infections.

They can also be litter trained!

Good Luck with your new friend!
